HOW TO FORMULATE THEIR OWN POULTRY FEEDS

SECRETES THAT DRIVE DEVELOPED AND DEVELOPING FARMERS TO FORMULATE THEIR OWN POULTRY FEEDS.

Feed formulation is the term we use to refer to the process of mixing different ingredients of a well balanced diet In right proportions that can supply all the required nutrients to our animals.

It has been discovered that only a few feed manufacturers that supply these feeds keep to the correct standards in poultry feed formulations allover the world and many of them make very poor-quality feeds that can't enhance production upto the expectations of farmers.

This sad situation has resulted in huge losses for poultry farmers arising from slow growth in chickens, low egg production, diseases, as well as death of the chickens. Formulating our poultry feeds on the farms is therefore one of the best ways to maintain quality of feeds supplied to us.

Feed formulation also cuts the cost of production. Depending on the costs of the raw materials, farmers who make their feeds at their farms  save almost  50% for every 100 kg bag of chicken feed, depending on the source of the raw materials.

The common feed ingredients used in formulation are whole maize, cottonseed cake, soybeans, sunflower, or fish meal.

The other ingredients are the feed additives (micronutrients, minerals, and vitamins) that are added to ensure that the chickens have a balanced feed that meets their daily nutrient requirements”.

The following are the DCP values for each of the common ingredients used in feed making: whole maize—8.23%

  1. soybeans—45%
  2. fishmeal—55%
  3. maize bran—7%
  4. sunflower—35%.

These are vital in case of making substitutes. Additionally,we use the Pearson's square method to calculate for the diet CP.

Always consider the Nutritional requirements of each class and stage of development of the birds you're formulating feeds for.

Feed ingredients for poultry diets are selected based on of factors such as nutrient content, anti-nutritional factors or toxins, palatability, quality and cost.

GOOD LUCK POULTRY FARMERS
